The TAFIAS Story

From Zero to Hero...

SCROLL DOWN

The TAFIAS Story

From Zero to Hero...

Deep in the jungle, on the edge of a mangrove forest near the enchanting island of Lamanoc in Talisay, Anda, Bohol, something exciting is happening...

You have probably heard the quote "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."

Well we like that but we would change it a bit to reflect the reality of our situation and our mission.

"Give a someone a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach someone to fish and then make delicious fish snacks and you feed them and their family for a lifetime."

In January 2015 we started a new project - to deliver tasty, healthy, export quality, "hand made in Bohol" pasalubong food products to the world.

By March 2015 we launched what we hope will be the the first of many.

TAFIAS WORLD FAMOUS TILAPIA CHIPS

We already made and sold tilapia chips before but the flavourings were simple and the packaging was, well, let's say, very simple indeed. Sales were poor.

Working together with our partner ANDAKIDZ we were able, in a very short time, to improve our existing chips, create new flavours, modernise our image, revolutionise our marketing effort and boost our self-confidence.

See how our logo and packaging has changed.

TAFIAS (Talisay Fishermen's Association established May 24 2009) a people’s organisation,  Registration Certificate No. 4267, of 50 fisherfolk are working hard, and in innovative ways, to improve their families' livelihoods and bring tasty high quality food products to their fans worldwide.

Our vision is an empowered community free of poverty, illiteracy and unemployment.

Our Mission is to improve the economic condition of marginalised fisherfolk and the community as well through proper education and training for successful and sustainable
implementation of various livelihood projects.

Simple but clean.

HOW WE DO IT

We have the capacity to produce over 100 boxes of WORLD FAMOUS TILAPIA CHIPS per day.

To make our WORLD FAMOUS TILAPIA CHIPS we first mix the ingredients by hand.

Our unique recipes have gone through rigorous tasting and testing sessions with locals and foreigners (both tourists and long term residents of Bohol).

We use a dough sheeter to roll out the sheets of the special dough mix. The chips are then cut by hand and fried in high quality vegetable oil.

After we package them in high grade cellophane to increase their shelf life and finally they are boxed in beautifully designed packaging, ready to be shipped to our fans wherever they may be.

WHERE WE DO IT

Our production facilities in Talisay, Anda, Bohol are currently basic and small but they are clean.

In development is a custom purpose commercial kitchen and production facility. As you can see above it's not quite ready yet but we aim to have it completed and fully equipped by mid-late 2015.

Together we are strong. Unstoppable.

Partners

Together we are strong. Unstoppable.

Without our partners TAFIAS would not be where it is today and more importantly,
you would not be able to taste our delicious and WORLD FAMOUS TILAPIA CHIPS!

So here we extend our special thanks to them.

BFAR (The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources) have been enormously helpful and a truly valuable partner.

They supplied us with a large quantity of tilapia fingerlings, sacks of feed, a freezer, fryer and other cooking utensils. In addition they have co-funded the new production house which is still in development.

We thank BFAR also for various training courses related to tilapia culture and how to produce value added tilapia products.

DOLE (The Department of Labour & Environment) gave us  training how to make polvoron and ice cream making. They also supplied cooking equipment including a gas range, blender and taro grinder.

ANDAKIDZ MTÜ, an Estonian foundation has a permanent active presence in Anda, Bohol.

Watch this video to see some of the projects ANDAKIDZ & TAFIAS have collaborated on:

ANDAKIDZ Director Robin Gurney and volunteer Janno Siimar of Velvet Creative Alliance, are responsible for creating this website, the new TAFIAS branding and the marketing strategy for launching our WORLD FAMOUS TILAPIA CHIPS. So we must also thank the Estonian Government Development Fund for co-funding this activity.

ANDAKIDZ also built a Community Centre (with the help of TAFIAS members, locals and 50+ foreign “voluntourists”) on TAFIAS land where children can “play & learn” and adults can “learn & earn”.

We must also thank ANDAKIDZ supporters and co-funders especially BKP Inc. and Henkel Schwarzkopf whose generous donations contributed massively to making the centre a success. TAFIAS is entrusted to manage and optimise the usage of the centre where a Children’s Toy & Book Library and an Adult Training Center is located.

We also would like to acknowledge the support of:

  • The DTI (Department of Trade & Industry) who gave us practical training on basic accountancy, business plan creation and marketing.
  • PAO (Provincial Agriculture Office) gave us the training on food safety.
